Splendor In Glass

Splendor In Glass

Jo An King

Hopelands Gardens135 Dupree Place

This horse represents one of the thousands of hand-carved wooden carousel horses. This depicts an “outside row stander,” the type that did not move up and down but was intricately decorated.
I’ve been fascinated by carousels ever since my childhood visits to the now defunct Kennywood Park near Pittsburgh. As I grew older and became a stained-glass artisan, I also came to appreciate the old-world craftsmanship of the hand-carved wooden animals as well. To execute the piece, I added stained glass because my 20 years of experience allowed me to predict that glass would add brightness and durability.
